I finished reading Rivers of London on the train on the way to work this morning, so thought I'd give a stab at reviewing it. I've never written an actual book review before, so lets see how it goes!

Rivers of London (Rivers of London #1) by Ben Aaronovitch
Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London’s Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he’ll face is a paper cut. But Peter’s prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter’s ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

I would give the book 4 stars, and tag it as fiction, crime, urban fantasy and mystery. It would be good for someone who was in the mood to read something that was adventurous, funny, and mysterious, and it's medium-paced. It's a mix of character and plot driven, there's strong character development, the characters are lovable and diverse.

The writing is a little uneven in places, and I'm not sure if it's because this is Aaronovitch's first stab at original novels (as opposed to Doctor Who franchise works), or if he wanted to write a different book than he did. The prose is clever, and there are a lot of nice turns-of-phrases and incidental observations about city-living that strike you as being the kind of incisive observation you didn't realize you already agreed with until he said it. The primary characters were interesting and had well-sketched out personalities and at least some measure of diversity.

However, it was still kind of hard to keep my mind on the narrative, because the clever commentary is very much at odds with the plot, which is the kind of capital-W Whacky that I would associate with...well, Doctor Who plots. I loved the world-building - the river spirits especially, and Beverley and Oxley and Tyburn - and I would've been much more interested in a serious take on that than the actual A-plot ended up being. The pacing is also a little off. You don't get the sense at all that months have passed in the course of the narrative, but I wonder if that's part of the same problem that I describe above - the A-plot requires time to pass but that's not really what Aaronovitch is interested in.

All in all, a quick-ish fun read with some neat ideas and snarky commentary. Could do a lot worse.

Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge is a blog hop hosted every Wednesday by Long and Short Reviews. The weekly prompts range widely, including both book-related and non-book-related topics. The idea is to get bloggers to interact, share a bit about their lives and connect with other bloggers

Today’s topic is: What Sci-Fi/Fantasy book you’d like to visit (and why)
I read a lot of urban fantasy, so it's mostly set in the real world but with that little bit of a fantasy/magical twist. Part of me wishes I could still say I wanted to live in the world of Harry Potter, post-defeat of Voldemort but I can't bring myself to say that anymore, even though that would have been my answer for years. Narnia would definitely be an option, in the Golden Age.

But I think my answer is going to be Rivers Of London. I'm re-reading the books right now and falling back in love with the London that Ben Aaronovitch created. I would really love to meet the river goddesses and learn magic from Nightingale.

The New Ways November is to 'respond to a difficult situation in a different way' and this is something I actually did in work today. I won't normally blog about that because boring!, however since it fits this prompt so perfectly, it seems right. I have been having a lot of difficulty getting a manager to sign off on some invoices so I can get them paid, and usually I would get annoyed and frustrated and end up quite angry. But today I took the time to sit down with him, go through each invoice, explain what I needed and why. Part of me was still frustrated because I shouldn't have to do that, but it ended up being very productive and I'm hoping will go smoother. And my manager said I was amazing for doing it, which also felt good!

I love trying new things, and especially learning new things, for no particular reason other than a love of learning. Action For Happiness November is New Ways November and it's all about trying new things, keeping our minds open and flexible, and boosting creative thinking.

Day 1 is make a list of new things to try this month and obviously here I am, trying out blogging. I'm not a big list maker, not a big plan in advance kind of person so I won't be writing a specific list of things to try.

I want to explore a new subject and I've picked Art History. I have a few books reserved at the library on the topic to start reading up about it.
I want to try and cook some new recipes and I've ordered a Hello Fresh box. I had a promo leaflet through the post with a discount code and the timing just seemed right
I've lived opposite the tennis club for ages and keep meaning to sign up for their beginner lessons.

I'm sure I'll find some other new things to try as the month goes on - like the confirmation bias, once I start looking for new things to try, I'll see them everywhere.

Hello, I'm Bellamy and welcome to my new blog. I'm very excited to be here and to share my love for books, the joy of learning, books, mental health & wellness, books, stationery, books, puzzles and books.

So I'm a 31 year old asexual gender apathetic person (they/them pronouns) living in Worcestershire in the UK. I work as Facilities Administrator for a real estate company. I'm a bookworm, crafter, mental health warrior, knitter, Swiftie, and lover of puzzles. I enjoy colouring in, puzzles, lego, and wordsearches. I love watching gymnastics, dancing and ice-skating but I'm far too uncoordinated to try them myself - although I do enjoy cycling and doing yoga badly. I've journalled for years but never tried blogging, and I love trying new thing, so here I am! I drink far too much coffee and eat way too much chocolate (according to other people, personally I think there's no such thing as either). I always try and have a positive outlook on life, work on finding happiness and peace, and have a passion for learning

If I have to describe myself in one word though, I'm most definitely a bookworm. I learned to read by the age of 3 or 4 and haven't taken my nose out of a book since. My favourite genres are urban fantasy and paranormal, but please don't ask me to choose a favourite book or author because I just can't.

I will definitely be writing about the books I'm reading. I love the Action For Happiness daily prompts and use them in journalling so they'll also be popping up here. I won't be talking about 'real life' or anything like that because that's honestly fucking boring but I'm excited to see where this new adventure takes me... won't you join me?
